One woman orders a cocktail for herself and a tall Bud Light for her husband, who she says will be arriving shortly.
Me: "I’ll go ahead and put in your drink, but I’ll need to wait until your husband arrives before serving him alcohol."
She frowns like I just suggested she order off the kids' menu.

Friend: "We can't serve you without ID, and we're also closed."
Woman: *Cue a series of curses.*
She then proceeds to take pictures of the volunteers who are still there working, mostly minors (which is illegal if you didn’t know).

When we talk about the cat distribution system being a real thing, we don't just mean that this system helps cats adopt their humans. That is true, of course, but we have heard it time and time again. We already know that is how it works. We know that even if we walk into a shelter, looking to adopt a cat, it is not us who will adopt the cat, because in the end, the cat will choose us. But did you know that the system works for dogs too?

It's true. Sometimes, the cat distribution system aims its meowgic not at us but at our canines. Sometimes, cats will adopt dogs and not humans. We will be second priority on that list, and you know what? We will be purrfectly happy about that. Because seeing our cats and our dogs get along so pawfectly will be more than worth it. Seeing them happy with one another will bring us all the joy that we will ever need.

As cat owners, we are baffled every time that we hear about someone abandoning their cats. We cannot even imagine doing that. Our cats are part of our families. Our cats are so beyond impurrtant to us. And the thought of our loved and spoiled house cat becoming a stray, having to fend for itself, having to survive, look for food, fight for its safety… is horrific.

It's difficult to see every time, no matter what, but somehow, today's video got to us more than usual. This cat was abandoned six whole years ago. His family not only didn't take him, they didn't bother finding a different home, and they never bothered coming back from him. And the world was not kind to this cat. In his time alone over the years, this poor kitty has gone blind. We're not sure how he managed to survive out there for as long as he did, but we do know one thing, and that is that he was very ready to find love again - to find a home, and thankfully, this kind woman found him and gave him not only that, but she managed to get him his sight back.

Cats are going to do what cats are going to do. You can try your best to make them follow your hooman rules, but in our purrsonal experience, the cats that listen 100% of the time are purractically non-existent.

Maybe you got the one trainable cat born every year, and they can be influenced, but as cat owners our entire lives, we've never successfully "trained" a cat like you can a dog. That being said, our cats still know they're not allowed on the kitchen counters and will get down when we tell them to. They still get up on them, though.

We also do things that non-cat lovers would consider gross, like kissing our cats on the mouths, but we would never serve food that our cats touched. Maybe you can do it when you're home alone and no one cares except you, but never around others. And you know what? That's not even the grossest part of the story about this mother-in-law. She has a litter box… in her kitchen.

A pretty great way to wake up on a Saturday is with a starred review of your upcoming book waiting from you. This one is from Kirkus. Here’s a link with to the full review, with the caveat that there are some mild spoilers in it, but the summation line seen above is almost certainly the pull quote that will go on all our messaging: “Classic Scalzi space opera at its wisecracking, politically pointed, and, somehow, fiercely optimistic finest.” Hey! I’ve done what I’ve been doing long enough for it to be “classic”! This is fantastic and also a real “If you’ve been reading Scalzi from the beginning, please schedule a colonoscopy” moment, if you ask me.

For those keeping score at home, this is the second starred review for The Shattering Peace, the first having come from Library Journal, with an additional positive review from Publishers Weekly. We’re in a good place with this one, I’m happy today, at least with the trade magazines. We’ll see what actual readers think of it soon.

More Shattering Peace news, including an official tour schedule, soon —

Customer: "Can I buy that A/C unit?"
Manager: "Sure. Just a heads-up: it’s the floor model, but there’s no discount since we’ve got more coming in by the end of the week."
Customer: "No discount? But it's got scratches!"
